27 Days of Oscar: Day 4, Hello Abu Dhabi, can you hear me?

I had started a quickie piece yesterday which was going to document my few woes in regard to watching all of this years nominees.  And to be honest, they were truly few...and almost non-existent today.

As I mentioned on day 1 I am hoping to pull together a piece for Awards Daily, handicapping the Foreign Film category.  At this point I have seen two of the nominees, "A War" and "Son of Saul."  I reached out to the wonderful handlers of "Mustang," but instead of the film I accidently received the CD.  Needless to say...it's good stuff!  But not going to help me on my plight.  I reached out again this morning, and voila.  It should be in the mail today.

With "Theeb," I thought I had the death knell to my challenge...but it ended up being a lot easier than I was making it out to be.  I had gone to the film's Wikipedia page, which let me to Mad Solutions, the distributor of the film, which gave me a contact email for their offices in Abu Dhabi.  I sent two emails, to no avail.  I began to sweat...what if it didn't actually happen this year!  The foreign film category is my favorite...agh!!!  So I reached out to my friend Scott Feinberg hoping he would have a contact for me.  He said to google "Theeb press kit" and I should get the contact I needed.  I did that, and within 10 minutes I had the link to watch the film.

In a reversal of expectations, I thought I was going to have no problem getting a copy of "Boy and the World" and "When Marnie Was There." In the past the folks at GKids have been more than helpful to me.  The year of "A Cat in Paris" and "Chico and Rita" they not only gave me the films, but also the original comic for C&R and the soundtrack and a tour of their tiny NYC office.  This year I can't seem to get anyone to email me back.  I hope I didn't do anything wrong. Their films often make my top 10 lists...pure coincidence, I swear, and this blogger can't be bought with free screeners. I could always pick up the phone, but 27 Days of Oscar wouldn't be the same without a little drama and suspense!

I also decided not to wait on my copy of "The Hunting Ground" to arrive and simply added the DVD plan to my Netflix account.  Now I can get THG as well as "Straight Outta Compton" "When Marnie was There," (one of the GKids nominees) and "Shaun the Sheep Movie."  Perhaps not worth the $11.99...but it is what it is.

This weekend I hope to watch several nominees and put a little dent in my count before the play I'm rehearsing goes into tech week.  I am going to finish out the Best Picture category with "Bridge of Spies" as well as Cinematography with "The Hateful Eight" and "Sicario."  I hope to watch "The Look of Silence" as well...but we shall see.  I probably won't be able to cram that much in, but we shall see.

Wish me luck!
