Dear Academy...my personal 2013 FYC's

The fact that the Academy Awards are just around the corner is almost unbelievable to me.  Today is the last day members have to get their ballots in, so consider this my personal For Your Consideration ad to the Academy.  The films, actors and directors I think should get in, that are probably either on the verge or complete long shots.

Best Picture:
First and foremost I hope (and believe!) that "Dallas Buyers Club," my favorite film of the year will be nominated for Best Picture.  I think it is the film with the most buzz right now (not including "American Hustle" which looks poised to win).  Although a win is virtually impossible a nomination would be wonderful.  Also hoping for "Inside Llewyn Davis" to maintain buzz with its recent National Society of Film Critics win.

But my four FYC's:
"Blue is the Warmest Color"
"Kill Your Darlings."
"Before Midnight"
"Fruitvale Station"

Come on Academy, be daring.  (haha)

Best Actress:
Adele Exarchoplous, "Blue is the Warmest Color"
Amy Adams, "American Hustle."
Julie Delpy, "Before Midnight."

I actually wouldn't be surprised if they nominated Adele Exarchopoulos for "Blue is the Warmest Color."  They really like to nominate foreign actresses.  And it is a great performance.  In my opinion it is the best performance of the year, man or woman...maybe the best in many years!

And then there is Julie Delpy for "Before Midnight!"  I had an amazing interview with her back in October that I hope to post it on Awards Daily later today.

Best Supporting Actress:
Melonie Diaz
"Fruitvale Station"

I am still haunted by Melonie Diaz's wonderful performance.  Octavia Spencer is the one who will probably get in, if anything from the film does...but if "Fruitvale" was getting the love it deserves Diaz might have been nominated as part of a sweep.

Best Director:
Best director is interesting.  Especially after last year...the most shocking category of the year.  I'm hoping for some love for for "Fruitvale Station"'s Ryan Coogler and a surprise nom for Jean-Marc Vallee for "Dallas Buyers Club."

OK, Academy, take note!

  1. I was just thinking this morning that the Academy always likes to throw in a wild card in the Lead Actress category, whether it's foreign (Emanuelle Riva, Marion Cotillard) or indie (Jennifer Lawrence for Winter's Bone, Melissa Leo for Frozen River) and wondered if that opened the door to Adele Exarchoplous. She'd be my "No Guts No Glory" pick for a nomination.

I see less of a surprise nomination in Best Picture. With so many fantastic (mostly mainstream) films, the story is going to be who is left out.
