The Foreign Film Shortlist

They've announced the shortlist for the Best Foreign Film category; nine features are still in the running. Notably absent is "The Past" from Oscar winning director Asghar Farhadi ("A Separation") as well as "Wadja," which was Saudi Arabia's first submission and had been getting quite a few good notices.

Included in the list is "The Grandmaster," which is the film that I mentioned in yesterday's post (Christmas Catch Up--East Coast Edition if you missed it) and "The Hunt," which stars Hannibal's Mads Mikkelsen as well as Golden Globe nominee "The Great Beauty."

From these nine films, the ultimate five nominees will be chosen:

Belgium--"The Broken Circle Breakdown"
Bosnia and Herzegovina--"An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker"
Cambodia--"The Missing Picture"
Denmark--"The Hunt"
Germany--"Two Lives"
Hong Kong--"The Grandmaster"
Hungary--"The Notebook"
Italy--"The Great Beauty"
Palestine--"Omar"
