On the fifth day of Christmas Catch Up
OK...so yesterday's post was a little negative. But disappointment turned into a great deal of joy when I came home to a Christmas present from Sony Pictures Classics. And a special delivery from The Weinstein Co. as well. I decided to expand my list of Catch Up movies as well. Although it was already a daunting list, I accept the further challenge!
This morning I already watched Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers." One thing is for certain...it is really beautifully shot. At first I thought it was a bit too "straight male fantasy" for me, but the more I got into it, the more I realized it was a (slightly) deeper look into the culture of teenage wasteland. James Franco got all the notices, but Selena Gomez is the real star of the film, imho. It is interesting how Korine explores different feelings, perspectives and emotions within one moment...something repeating dialogue...even repeated by different characters. But I can't quite get past the fact that the film just isn't for me. Although I did giggle when Franco's Alien "pleasured" the silencer of the gun. And...there was Britney's "Everytime" as well...Hmmm...maybe I did love this movie.
I chose "Spring Breakers" mostly because I knew it wasn't something I could show my parents. But also need to figure out what to watch at the airport/on the airplane. You might recall that last year I watched "Flight" at the airport on my layover. Probably wasn't the best decision.
I'm thinking "Philomena" is a great choice for the trip. Certainly not "Blue is the Warmest Color." I think Mom and Dad will be cool with "The Armstrong Lie" and "The Spectacular Now." Dad might like "Prisoners." And Will and Josh (my nephews) should be cool with "Frozen." Which looks to be the family outing movie. We have one every year.
A little bit about what happens after the Catch Up. The whole point of the Christmas Catch Up is to see all the films I think might make my top 10 lists...the Awards Wiz Awards. So...on the 26th I will publish a reflection of the year, as well as a list of rewatch movies. And a few more...such as "August Osage County," which I missed last night at the last press screening. Definitely want to see "Gravity" and "American Hustle" again. As well as "The Bling Ring," "Kill Your Darlings" and "Before Midnight." All of these movies are bouncing around my top 10...but not sure they will all make it. And the order is a little confusing to me as well.
I would really like to finish "House of Cards" and "Hannibal." (Yes...I know...I know...no excuse!) But that's about all I can do on the TV front.
OK...gotta finish getting ready for my trip. See Y'ALL tomorrow!!!
